sweltering in the hot hiroshima heat: day two (Rivers Cuomo)

It was a breakfast buffet at the hotel with plenty of options! I tend to not have much of an appetite in the summer but my husband isn’t like that, maybe because he grew up with the heat.

After breakfast we got the bus to Shukkeien Garden・縮景園 which I loved. I love gardens anyway but I think this was one of the best I’ve been to in Japan. It was blistering heat and not very crowded. There were lots of turtles and koi in the pond and I felt sorry for them with the heat. Animals have done nothing to contribute to climate change but they are still suffering because of it nonetheless.

You could either get a ticket just for the garden or a combo ticket for the Prefectural Museum which saved ¥100 (money is money). We shot straight up the stairs to the cafe and cooled down with an iced matcha set.

It was a good art gallery – I’m going to call it art gallery rather museum.

Not tired of art, we walked to Hiroshima Museum of Art which was more classical art along with a Horiuchi Seiichi exhibition which I thought wouldn’t be that good but was what I ended up enjoying the most.

My husband being the glutton for punishment that he is wanted okonomiyaki again. It was better this time he said. I just had a drink.

Oh and it just so happened to be near the ice cream place again. I had salt + pistachio, he had latte and summer spring.

Our final cultural stop was at Fukuromachi Elementary School Peace Museum・袋町小学校平和資料館. Hardly anyone was there but I would highly recommend it. Of course it was very sad but I don’t think we should shy away from things like that. There was a man who explained the history to us – he did this in Japanese but I suspect he would have had English documents available. The museum had English throughout. My husband confirmed to the man that I could understand Japanese but he didn’t look convinced.

Back to the hotel we went for a rest and to get ready for the evening!

We went to ドスココーヒー | TACOS&BURRITO DOSCO COFFEE for dinner – they have vegan options.

Why were we in Hiroshima? To see Scott Murphy and *drum roll* RIVERS CUOMO of Weezer! It was amazing! We were right at the front, I was practically stood next to Rivers, it was a tiny venue and I think it’s the best I have ever seen him. I loved it.

We headed back to the hotel and I was still high as a kite from seeing my idol. The love started when I was 14 and I’m 35 now, so it’s a long relationship even if it is all one-sided :)

Hiroshima is a great city – people are very friendly and no-one flinched upon seeing me which happens in Tokyo ALL THE TIME! You should go, just not in the summer.
