sweltering in the hot hiroshima heat: day one

We went to Hiroshima last week – Thur 27th – Sat 29th July. We got the shinkansen from Tokyo Station at 7:30 and arrived in Hiroshima at 11:27. It was hot! It said it was the same temperature as Tokyo but it felt boiling. We got the bus (we could use Pasmo) to the hotel ANAクラウンプラザホテル広島・Crowne Plaza – ANA Hiroshima, an IHG Hotel (it was a really nice hotel).

We headed off to have lunch, we’d decided to have okonomiyaki the Hiroshima style which neither of us think is that good but kind of felt like we had to. We ended up in this not so great one where I kept being told in English ‘very hot’ whilst gesturing to the hot plate that she had just fried an egg on. No mayo either, this is why Osaka wins every time.

We headed to the shotengai area for a bit of shelter from the sun and went to Kurashiki Coffee.

We went back to the hotel during the late afternoon to rest. We had a look at the Peace Museum stuff but there was a massive queue and we’d been before so we left it.

This picture was in the hotel and the caption underneath looks like ‘crap No.2’.

After we’d rested, we went to Pizza Juicy and shared a Giallo and a Quattro Formaggio. Nice pizza but I always think pizzas outside of Italy can be just slightly too doughy. We stuffed it down us and were out within 30 mins!

We decided to trot to Hiroshima Castle. Even though it was still hot, it was much better now the sun was gone.

Thinking that we were still in Italy, we went for ice cream from ドルチェ そごう広島店. The best ice cream I’ve had in Japan and one of the best I’ve had anywhere. Always have the salt・伯方の塩. My husband had the watermelon and pistachio.

Going on, we went via the Motoyasu River, to see the Atomic Bomb Dome.

That concludes day one – we were fast asleep as soon as our heads touched our pillows, dreaming of tomorrow.

Take care,
Emily
