2022 golden week trip to hagi, yamaguchi: part 1

This year we went to Hagi for Golden Week. We got the Shinkansen both ways and I purposely booked our seats so that we’d be able to see Fuji-san. Unfortunately it was cloudy both ways, so we didn’t see him. It was lovely speeding along the Japanese countryside though, I never get tired of how green Japan is.

We enjoyed lazy days, eating ice creams, going to the beach, sipping coffee in cafes and taking long walks. They all look the same flavour, but the outer two are natsu-mikan (a citrus fruit) and the middle is from Hagi Purin. Their pudding is really nice, so you should try it out if you go to Hagi.

Day one we went to Hagi Honjin to indulge in the onsens. I’ve never been a fan on going to the onsen, but after our visit, I think I’m a convert. It was one of the best experiences of my life. It was so relaxing, hardly anyone around – 4 in total whilst I was there and of those four, one was me and one was my mother-in-law. Her tip was to go on a weekday during the day slot whilst any tourists are out exploring.

Day two we went to Cafe Aibagawa to have the sandwich lunch plate. After we’d demolished that, we trotted to Kakuretsubaki to have dessert – pudding for my husband and cheesecake for me. Both were great, but I’d go for the pudding every time – it had puffed rice, mochi and some dried, black beans in it which gave a salty contrast to the black sugar syrup that you add.

We finished the day going to the beach to see the sunset.

I hope you enjoyed your weekend and speak soon,
